Ana Torfs
Dark Space Where Things Cannot Be Put

What is artificial in what we perceive? How do we construct it? The work of the Belgian artist Ana Torfs explores the act of perception and inquires about the implicit historical conventions that come with it.

Through the dialectics between image and text, this exhibition explores the dichotomy between what we see and what we know or believe we know. Using references as diverse as psychology, shadow theater, literature, sign language, botany and travel journals, her pieces are conceived as exercises of translation and deciphering, destined to question representation. Torfs investigates the very constitution of knowledge that arises from language and its derived colonial structures, and recovers the liminal space from where the possibility for the interpretation of our experience emerges.
