Stockholm syndrome occurs when a victim establishes an affective link with their captors. Many women feel this way about maternity: their lives have been taken hostage and they have no chance of escape. The pandemic has only exacerbated this feeling. Yet their captors are not their children, but rather the patriarchal system that through a narrative of love, conceals the labor that sustains life while exploiting it.
The pieces exhibited herein reveal maternity to be a concept in dispute. On one side there is the violence of the economic and legal systems; on the other, struggles overlapping like waves in their demands for reproductive rights and care strategies that escape the logic of capitalist accumulation. This is an exhibition about the enormous political potential of maternity.
