Juan García Ponce praised Miguel Castro Leñero for his “pictures in which the painting shows the painting.” Castro Leñero typically counterposes images made with pure, elemental strokes onto surfaces created through accidents and exercises with the material itself.
The association they awaken is innocent, idyllic. In the words of Alberto Blanco: “There is nothing to understand: it’s enough to look with your eyes wide open. Or, if you will, you need to approach what’s there to understand with a child’s fresh gaze.” Barco dates from the period when Castro Leñero’s work found special relevance among Mexican audiences and markets, in the sense that it suggested an emancipation from all cultural and political impositions.
