Combining humor with provocation, Maris Bustamente’s many feminist works are representative of the No-Grupo in its final stage. This mask was used by Bustamante at a Montaje de Momentos Plásticos [Montage of Visual Moments].

Acerbically and incisively challenging the phallocracy and prevailing sexism, it constitutes the artist’s response to the Freudian theory of “penis envy.” The work is now rightly considered an artistic milestone of gender critique in Mexico.
