The Clothesline
Monica Mayer is one of the earliest artists to have taken an interest and a position and produced output in relation to feminism in Mexico. Mayer invited 800 women to complete the sentence: “As a woman, what I dislike most about the city is...” on pieces of pink paper. Each of the answers was mounted on a structure that alluded to a clothesline, as a reference to a daily activity considered women’s work, to open a dialogue about the violence that women experience in public space.

This piece was presented for the first time in a collective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. A second version was created in Los Angeles in 1979 as part of the visual project Making it Safe by Suzanne Lacy. The piece has been reactivated in other contexts.
