La corriente
Yolanda Gutiérrez
The Current
Yolanda Gutiérrez’s installations combine an ecological sensibility, experiments with materials of natural origin, and a defiance of the convention that deposits sculptures on a base or on the ground. Gutiérrez has often located her interventions in bodies of water or in open space, hanging them from the ceiling of an architectural structure.

La corriente is one of her hanging installations. This evocation of a fleet of rustic palm tree pods boats was made expressly so that they would be reflected in the illuminated drop ceiling of the UNAM’s Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte, in which the boats appear to be floating on a lake, viewed from below. This combination of lyricism and material creativity is characteristic of Gutiérrez’s work as a sculptor.
