The journalist Adela Legarreta Rivas had gone to the beauty salon in preparation for her latest book launch. On the way, she was struck by a white Datsun that crushed her body between two lampposts.

Starting in the 1940s and for nearly fifty years, Enrique Metinides covered accidents, tragedies, urban chaos, and other misfortunes afflicting Mexico City residents for the newspaper La Prensa. This startling image puts the photojournalist’s storytelling prowess on full display, as well as his ability to light and compose images that evoke film scenes.
