Relojes I, II, III
Pablo Vargas Lugo
Clocks I, II, III
This piece is part of Vargas Lugo’s inquiry into how machines interfere with our perception of time. One sculpture shows three forms of experiencing time on three monitors. All are 24 hours in duration, but time passes at different speeds in each sculpture; most importantly, it is divided into prime numbers. This decision destabilizes the conventions through which we have learned to measure time in manageable, intuitive segments, such as a quarter-hour or half-day.

In this way, Vargas Lugo uses the very same technology that permits the control and industrialization of time to perform an unsettling gesture.
