In 1971, the Brazilian artist and activist Claudia Andujar travelled to the Río Catrimani
region, in the northern part of Brazilian Amazonia. Ever since, she has built a relationship
with the Yanomami culture that would become a lifelong commitment to its people. This exhibition and the accompanying folio present the first major international retrospective dedicated to the long collaboration between Andujar, the shaman and leader Davi Kopenawa and the Yanomami people of Brazil. They also constitute a platform revealing a multidimensional perspective on Yanomami society through the art and voices of its people. Andujar’s photographic production exposes the consequences of the invasion of Yanomami territory by illegal gold prospectors, the constant violations of their human rights and the genocide initiated by the Brazilian dictatorship. The texts included in this publication narrate the history of the Yanomami struggle to ensure that this violence is never repeated.
