Mariana Castillo Deball
Amarantus takes its name from a perennial flower that never wilts. It is a metaphor for the persistence of historical objects that continue to speak to us today, making evident not only how the people who created them structured their reality, but also the successive ways they were appropriated and interpreted. The exhibition presents a substantial portion of Mariana Castillo Deball’s work from the last 20 years, during which time the artist has engaged with the visual arts, storytelling and fiction to history, anthropology, and archaeology.

Her work explores the material culture of pre-colonial Mexico, and she takes note of the byproducts that have come out of both her research and its successive interpretations. This publication closely examines the theoretical considerations that make it possible to engage with and articulate Castillo Deball’s work with regard to different orientations and disciplines.
