Farce and Artifice

Melanie Smith creates permutations of images that mix and blur the different logics at work in the worlds of painting, film, and performance. This exhibi­tion explores her impulse to dismantle her own gaze as an artist/producer of images, focusing on the experimentation with distance that has suffused her latest work. The pieces are shown simultaneously in two cities: Puebla and Mexico City. Using peepholes, a system of cross-gazes and cross-references allows viewers to glimpse the other location in real time. In this way, a dialogue is forged not only between two spaces, but also between two different moments of Smith’s career.
