Rubén Ortiz Torres
This publication accompanies Customatism, the first retrospective exhibition by Rubén Ortiz Torres, a California-based Mexican artist and key figure in contemporary art since the 1980s. Ortiz Torres has developed a critical, cosmopolitan, technically inventive and intellectually comical practice.

His work makes it possible to see how the history of the avant-garde negotiates with the popular culture of the Americas, in a constant migration from Latin America to the United States. From a transnational perspective, his work is essential to understanding the deconstruction of styles, the dislocation of identitarian paradigms, and new forms of aesthetic politics.
