This forum will also analyze the way that artistic, museographic and cultural practices have been key to this struggle and to ways of configuring possible decolonization processes. With the participation of artists such as Máret Ánne Sara, Elina Waage Mikalsen, Dine Arnannguaq Fenger Lynge, Geir Tore Holm and Tomas Colbengtson, as well as researcher Eva Maria Fjellheim, activist Petra Laiti, and cultural organisers Sajje Solbakk and Anne May Olli, we will explore critical pathways toward rethinking our conceptions of the autonomy, sovereignty and production of Indigenous peoples in the context of contemporary art.

These interventions will be complemented with the local experiences of figures such as the Ayuujk linguist Yásnaya E. Aguilar, the P’urhepecha artists of Colectivo Cherani and the experts in Indigenous law Érika Bárcenas and Orlando Aragón.

“Practices of Sovereignty” is an encounter organized by the MUAC in collaboration with the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA) that will emphasize points of convergence while revealing particularities of the practices of sovereignty of Indigenous nations: both the experiences of P’urhepecha and Ayuujk artists, linguists and activists in the Mexican context and the experiences of the Sámi nation, the Indigenous peoples of the Fennoscandia region, which consists of territories found in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia.

Following the private “Practices of Sovereignty” encounter, the public forum “Stories of the Blue Night. Sámi, P’urhepecha and Ayuujk Art and Culture Forum” will be held.
