Reef is a project that aims to use dance to invert the logic of the archive in order to submit it to the logic of the stage: the sphere where things disappear in the very act of their creation and whose material traces cannot be preserved.

A coral reef is both a body and the record of this body.
Its corpses bear witness to its past and sustain its living body.
-Steve Zissou
Over nine days a dance is repeated. Each day, a different person records some aspect of the bodies in motion and places it in a depository, which is in turn an attempt at an archive.
The task proposed by the A.M. collective is a staging of the limits of the archive, a challenge to its force of law in complicity with finitude. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. The premise is that access to this anti-archive – a rigorous attempt at documentation based on the field of knowledge of each archivist (visual artists, scientists, sound engineers, etc.) – depends on the presence of a body in motion, without which it disappears; an exercise that will prevent it from closing itself off. The record thus becomes an extension of the body in motion that can never be self-supporting, given that the living is never replaced by the archive, leading to a tension between the two. The fission that undermines the experience to be archived from the start – the operation to separate impression from imprint-bearer – reverts to the archive. The logic of the theft of autonomy is inverted.

Colectivo A.M.
Emerged at the end of 2010 after a funeral ceremony carried out during the closing of the choreographic project Sala Tomada at the Teatro de la Danza in Mexico City. The collective’s current members are all artists linked to choreography and the performing arts, passionate about history, defenders of reflection, and critical of their own labor. Although their membership includes different nationalities, they all pursue their work in Mexico City. Each member also has his or her own creative project: choreographic, interpretive, theoretical.
