During the investigation that gave rise to the Visualities and HIV in Mexico Collection, and later The Seropositive Files (CDArkheia, MUAC, 2020), one of our interests (which, for a variety of reasons, had been left in drafts) was an exploration of the musical scene related to aids and its insertion into popular culture.
This project seeks to expand the range of “the visual” and go beyond the two-dimensional image of the artistic object. In the particular case of aids, we understand visualities as a complex imaginary constructed through personal or indirect experience, the consecutive bombardment of marketing, the medicalization of society and its customs, prejudices, scientific research, popular mythology…
This playlist brings together songs that directly or indirectly refer to HIV-Aids. Some mention it in their lyrics while others involve the particular history of certain artists; there are others that, with a little imagination, lead to interesting interpretations. Here, one can find critical discourses, almost agitprop, lyrics that are prejudicial and some others that are plain cheesy, violent and amorous, even perverse… Together, they all capture the imaginary of aids, as it is undeniable that, even if they are stigmatizing or based on the experiences of others (it’s obvious that the seropositive experience is not the same as the seronegative experience), they still contribute to signifying the virus and its consequences.
