At the beginning, when the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (aids) made its appearance in medical statistics and the global media, there was a highly paranoid and discriminatory reaction from society. Its spread, which primarily occurred in homosexual communities, provoked all kinds of misunderstandings and conspiracy theories regarding its origins and transmission, which sharpened homophobia, xenophobia and a general fear for all kinds of “others.” HIV is an epidemic that accelerated thanks to globalization. Its primary means of transmission are semen, vaginal fluids, blood and breast milk. The virus’s expansion was driven by an increase in travel and trade, the growth of sexual tourism, the dissemination of intravenous drugs and even the intensification of humanitarian brigades in war zones or following natural disasters.
