DIGITAL PRESERVATION
ARTISTIC AND DOCUMENTARY
COLLECTIONS

NOVEMBER 2021
TO FEBRUARY 2022

Heritage in a Bit. Digital Preservation of Artistic and Documentary Collections aims to discuss the contemporary conditions of digital preservation from cultural, artistic and museological practices.

The international academic meeting aims to bring together digital conservators, researchers, heritage curators, activists, artists, and cultural critics.

We aim to explore, from a cross-sectional and situated perspective, disciplinary tensions between fields of study such as Art History, Digital Humanities, Archival Science, and Heritage Conservation, among many others.

Keynote addresses, panels, forums, interviews: Heritage in a Bit presents specialists in preservation, contemporary theory and digital culture in a variety of formats. In the search for an agile conversation with a broad audience, we have organized a diverse array of perspectives with the goal of asking fundamental questions regarding the digital preservation of artistic and documentary archives. Do digital collections shape and determine a large part of our contemporary collective memory? This is one of our questions.

Cápsulas

Here, you can find audiovisual materials that provide keys to understanding the thematic transformations of digital preservation: talks, clips and recordings of live events. We don’t just ask what is a bit, an NFT or metadata, but the ways in which these concepts determine a series of contemporary social and political realities.

Talleres

Digital collections represent a great technical and curatorial challenge. A wide-ranging conversation is needed in which we share concepts and methodologies that are undergoing a constant metamorphosis. Our workshops establish dialogues on preservation strategies and policies, the curation of metadata and the conservation of digital artworks, with a special emphasis on the challenges of digitalization for the humanities. The paths of reflection are as varied as the possibilities inaugurated by these new fields of study.
